The elk came out of the trailers at a full run. I suppose they were glad to be free again. Once they were in the woods, they grouped up and looked back at the many people who were watching them.
The elk remain in the holding pen until the grasses green up in the Cataloochee Valley. In the meantime, they are radio collared and monitored for any problems that may have occurred relating to the relocation. Once they are released into the park, their whereabouts are monitored by satellite tracking of the radio collars.
